Future Executive Senior Director
Keeta Hastings
Mary Kay Representative Has Put a Beautiful Face on Life
Her Work Turned Her Life Around Personally, Philosophically
By Sandra Jill Pennecke (Correspondent for the Beacon) February 27, 2000 Virginia Beach, Va.
Pink Cadillacs are synonymous with Mary Kay Cosmetics. Keeta Hastings keeps the cherished photos of hers--a reward for her service--by a desk in her home office. On the shelves are Mary Kay dolls, plates and other treasures of the woman Hastings admires. It also represents her 25 year career. The Bellamy Manor resident is a longtime employee of the cosmetic direct sales company, and has no plans of stopping anytime soon. "I will be a little old lady asking, 'Would you like a free facial" she said. Hastings, 54, an independent senior sales director, said her career choice ran parallel with finding herself and God.
Suffering from depression and low self-esteem, Hastings said she found a new world awaiting her within the cosmetic company's philosophy. Hastings never wore makeup and never imagined selling it or teaching others the proper way to handle it. But, while living in San Diego in 1974, Hastings recalls receiving a coupon for a free facial.
The initial meeting launched Hastings' rebirth. But it took a lot of convincing for Hastings to give it a try. "I was what you would basically call a heckler. I gave (the consultant) a hard time all the way. But, really I felt that I wasn't worth $18," said Hastings, referring to the cost of the cosmetic kit back then. "I had very poor self-esteem.
I told her that beauty consultants are tall, thin and blonde. They are not short, fat and brunette" Yet, Hastings gave the makeup and company a chance. On March 1, 1975 Hastings became a consultant with the direct-sales company that teaches women how to enhance
their features through the proper application of makeup. "I've always said that whether you are in Mary Kay for three days, three weeks, three years or a lifetime, you will go out better because of the experience, just in the self-esteem and the confidence that you grew while you were in,". Hastings and her husband, Carl, have two daughters, Katrina 32; and Kristin Kunkle, 30. With a career, Hastings regained her self-confidence earned an income and stayed home with her children. The flexibility of the career, where she puts in 20 hours a week, allowed her to participate in her daughters' activities.
She was a classroom volunteer and chaperoned field trips and gymnastics competitions. We didn't want someone else to raise our children or give them to someone else for eight hours a day and have them raised with their moral standards, their thoughts and their philosophies on life," Hastings said. Instead, Hastings embraces the philosophy of the company. "Mary Kay's philosophy has always been that you put God first in your life, you put your family second and you put your career third," she said. Like their mother, Katrina and Kristin are both Mary Kay consultants who teach and train customers to use the products through facials and skincare classes. Five of Hastings' sisters also have worked as consultants. As a senior sales director, she has 250 customers and 60 consultants. Hastings still maintains a busy schedule, but she has enough time to spend with her 3 year old granddaughter, Emma. Hastings has seen many changes in the company, which began in 1963, powered by the belief that women could be both successful and feminine. She says there were 15,000 beauty consultants in the early 1970s; now there are 500,000 in 29 countries. "The company is blessed by God because of the principles that it was founded on," she said. I went to Mary Kay College. I figure that when you earn a Grand Am, that's your associate's degree. When you earn a Grand Prix, that's your bachelor's degree. I earned my masters because earned a Cadillac," she said.

I joined Mary Kay in 1989. I was staying at the county fair with my 4 children as they were showing their 4-H animals & came across a Mary Kay booth at the fair. On a whim I asked the Consultant how do you get started in Mary Kay....she took me to a meeting & I signed my agreement. I had no idea what I was really getting myself into, but I loved the positive atmosphere of the meeting & being around sharp women. I have won 2 diamond rings in Queen Court of Sales & 3 free Mary Kay cars. Thru the years in Mary Kay I have learned so much about my inner strength, passing on my belief system to other women and learning how to have girlfriend fun! Not only have I learned that there are fabulous women in Mary Kay, I have learned that there are women all over who need to feel good about themselves & I love building women up where ever God leads me in my daily life.
I have been married to my best friend Fred for 36 fabulous years. The Lord has blessed us with 4 wonderful children, 3 in law children that we adore, and 6 beautiful grandchildren that are the love of my life. I am blessed beyond measure! I love my job as an Assistant Manager of an international clothing boutique called BCBG Maxazria. Someday I want to own a big beautiful standard Poodle - no time for one right now! My next goal is to take my husband on a Mediterranean Cruise, along with stopping in to Paris to attend a fashion show and then on to Amsterdam where he was born and where both of our forefathers came from. As you can see, Mary Kay has taught me a lot about time management, getting the jobs done & to never stop dreaming.

Brooke Nadeau of Everett, WA. Brooke was our units Miss Go-Give for 2008 and our 1st runner-up for Queen of Sales 2008. She started her Mary Kay business in October 2002. What she likes best about her business is the amazing woman that she has met along the journey and “friendships beyond compare”.
Brooke is married with two adult children. Her husband, Ken, was her high school sweetheart. Her daughter Christina is 26 and a future director (she just doesn't know it yet), and her son Jeremiah is 23. We have a house full with two cats (Cuddles and Snuggles), Ken's dog Thor (8 year old Lab), Christina's dog Chaos (he is a 4 year old pug). Then their newest addition is Sasha, she is almost 2 years old and a Chinese Crested and Chihuahua, Dachshund. Brooke says, “She is so cute and a total love. What a blessing she has been”.
In addition to working her Mary Kay business, Brooke has been a medical technician for 20 years. When asked what people would be surprised to know about her she said, “I want to learn to play the piano”.
Brooke wanted to share – “I love my Mary Kay business and can't image my life without it. The growth for me has been great! I will never be able to repay the kindness of Sandi Brown for thinking enough of me to share this wonderful journey. As well as the support and belief of so many people along the way- They have been able to see what I cannot. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH”

Nancy Harkins
I became a consultant June 1981 shortly after I had my first facial. There are two people that were instrumental one being my mother, for several months she would call me and say "let's go to Helen's for a facial". I would always say "No. I like what I use." Then one week when my husband (Dan) was at a meeting out of town she call again I told her I was wallpapering our bathroom and couldn't do it, on the third day I just said to myself go with her and get it over. Well. I could not believe how good my skin felt. As I was using it every day and as I looked in the mirror I thought I could see a difference, but maybe it was wishful thinking. After a little over a week Dan said to me "Gee, your skin sure looks nice", he had no idea I was doing anything different. I decided that next day to call Helen my consultant and told her I would be interested in sharing this wonderful skin care with others. Thank you Mother and Dan.
The thing I like best about my Mary Kay business is how it can work around your family and all the things Mary Kay teaches us. That we can do anything we set our minds to.
I am married to a wonderful guy Dan, for 47 years. We have two great sons, JD 46, and Blake 30. I have a stepson Dan Jr. 49; he has two sons and a daughter. Kaity is the first girl in our family in 42 years. Needless to say we were all very ecstatic. We have had many cats and dogs, but at this time only two cats, Midnight and Lilly. Prior to my Mary Kay business I was a dental assistant, worked for a department store in collections, and in a photo lab for my mother.
I think people would be surprised to know that I am a shy person and at the time I started Mary Kay I lacked self confidence. Thanks to my director I got over the hump. She had ask me if I would give my I Story at one of area meetings. I thought it wouldn't be hard until I got there and saw about 300 people. I told her I couldn't do it----she said "Yes You Can"----I don't know how I got though it but I did, and that was the beginning. Mary Kay said "WE CAN DO ANYTHING IF WE SET OUR MIND TO IT." Thank You Mary Kay!
Connie King
Connie King of Lynnwood, WA. Connie was our unit's #5 in our 2008 Queen's Court of Sales. She became a beauty consultant in 2003. When asked what she enjoys about her Mary Kay business she said, " I enjoy the excitement when a woman finds the perfect look or product. Mary Kay is a product that women know and enjoy. I like to wrap everything in tissue paper for delivery and most feel it's the extra pampering of the products that remind them of the "gold mine" they've just ordered. Also, It gives me a chance to touch base with the women I sell to. I work from home and miss the personal contact. This fills that gap."
Connie has been married to a wonderful man for 15 years and has 3 boys (24, 14 & 12), 2 corgi's (Buck & Lilli) and a cat (Pepper). She worked in radio as an announcer for 23 years before deciding on working from home. She has a home studio to do voice work (commercials) from. It has afforded her the luxury to avoid the daily drive to Seattle (21 miles one way). When asked, "What would people be surprised to know about you?", she replied, "Aside from my age? MK has kept a good 10 years at bay.. I'd say I'm pretty much an open book. I love to share thoughts, stories and life!"
Jessica Matheson
Colette Robinson
Colette Robinson of Lynnwood, WA Collette signed her Mary Kay Agreement in January of 1994, one month after getting married to her husband. She had been a satisfied Mary Kay customer for many years and her consultant friend Pat Ewbank had been asking her for well over a year to join her in this wonderful career!
The positive environment of Mary Kay is something she truly loves! She says, It is so much healthier than my previous career environment in corporate America.
Collette is a widow with no pets at present. Parakeets are her pet of choice and they have brought much joy to her home in the recent past. She has no children by birth, although the Lord has given her numerous "adopted" children through her church contacts and ministries and she says she loves them all!
She is a manager of the Martha Lake Curves. She stated, I also get the opportunity to love on ladies through that venue, helping them look and feel better about themselves by reaching weight loss and exercise goals!
When asked if there is anything else she would like to share she said, Mary Kay is the best skin care and the best career available! I am forever grateful to Mary Kay Ash for creating such a wonderful product and company and to Pat Ewbank for her loving and gentle persistence in encouraging me to become a Mary Kay Consultant! The Mary Kay values and teachings have brought personal growth and positive change that continue to have a huge impact on my life.
